Which came first, Whitchurch or Stouffville? The area that is now called Whitchurch Township was actually inhabited by varying native people as far back as 1500 BC. Trails made by native-cultured people and artifacts are the proof of who and when Whitchurch was inhabited. Over time, the native people moved off and the Mississaugas moved into the area. During the 17th Century, the British were busy creating and expanding land f& boundaries for the Region of York, which lead them to purchase Markham Township and the western part of Whitchurch from the Mississaugas people. At the beginning of the 18th Century, Stouffville began to take shape and become a hotspot for settlers and by 1832, the name Stouffville stuck with its residents. Both Whitchurch and Stouffville grew in population and settled businesses. The amalgamation of Whitchurch Township and Stouffville Village happened officially in 1971 as a municipality in the Region of York, and part of the Greater Toronto Area. Partially based on the Oak Ridges Moraine makes that part of Whitchurch – Stouffville a rurally and environmentally protected Conservation & Greenbelt. Communities within Whitchurch – Stouffville include: Wesley Corners, Bethesda, Vivian, Gormley, Vandorf, Bloomington, Ringwood, Cedar Valley, Preston Lake, Ballantrae, Lemonville, Pine Orchard, Lincolnville, Musselman’s Lake and Stouffville.
Whitchurch – Stouffville is bordered by Highway 404 in the west, Davis Drive in the north, northern position of 19th Avenue in the south and York-Durham Line in the east. The positioning of Whitchurch – Stouffville only being 50 km’s north of the downtown core of Toronto makes real estate investing in the area highly attractive. Conservation areas such as the Whitchurch Conservation Area, the Pangman Springs Conservation Area and Bruce’s Mill Conservation Area are alternate outlets for employment opportunities through its upkeep of many trails and parks (the Oak Ridges Trail Association). Dining and drinking in this town have a very distinctive ‘British flair’. The Earl of Whitchurch tavern and The Lion of Stouffville are fun spots to enjoy some pub-like atmosphere. The Coach House Pub, Sgt. Peppers Pub & Grill, the Stakeout Dining Room & Lounge and the King’s Landing Bar & Grill are just as tempting for a night out and a great meal.
